Abstract

Abstract Introduction: Surgery is one of the causing of stress and its related physiological and mental reactions related to stress. Anxiety before surgery and its complications is fully known in surgery and anesthesiology fields which is necessary to investigate more to solve the mentioned drawback. So, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of awareness on stress and anxiety in patients undergoing orthopedic surgery. Material and Methods: A clinical trial study was done on 100 patients undergoing orthopedic surgery. Patients were randomly separated into two groups of 50 individuals as experiment and control groups. For each patient in the experimental group training course of anesthesia and surgery was performed. In the other side, the control group received usual care. The anxiety of patients in both experiment and control groups were recorded before and after surgery. Finally, SPSS13 software was used for data analysis. Results: Based on the analyzed results the mean anxiety score of patients in the experiment group was significantly reduced after the surgery (P<0.001). But there was no significant difference between anxiety of before and after surgery in control group (P>0.05). Moreover, the anxiety was significantly lower in experiment group in compare with the control group (P<0.001). Conclusion: It can be concluded that that education before surgery has a significant impact on controlling and reducing anxiety in patients before and after the surgery.
