Abstract

Introduction: Oral cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers and is one of 10 most causes of death. The proper knowledge of general dentists about oral cancer and suspected precancerous lesions can cause early diagnosis and treatment of patients, so the aim of this study was the evaluation of knowledge of general dentists in Babol about oral cancer. Materials & Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was done on 85 general dentists who worked in Babol. The dentists were 57 males and 28 females, with the mean age of 38.52±10.29 years and the mean time passed from their graduation was 12.01±11.5 years. A questionnaire was prepared and dentists filled it out. Data were analyzed via SPSS software, by student’s t-test, one-way ANOVA and Pearson correlation coefficient. Results: The mean score of total dentists’ knowledge was 8.95±2.7 of 14. The mean score of knowledge was 9.04±2.24 and 8.70±2.06, in males and females respectively. 61.8% of dentists gained moderate score of knowledge and their knowledge were declined by increasing the time passed from their graduation (P=0.033). 88.2% of dentists knew the most important predisposing factor of oral cancer but over one half of the answers (51.8%) to the most common precancerous lesion was incorrect and 60.1% of them did not know the most common site of precancerous changes. Conclusion: The results indicated that knowledge of dentists in Babol about oral cancer was not sufficient. Therefore some established educational programs about oral cancer is recommended in order to increase the knowledge of dentists. Key words: Knowledge, oral cancer, general dentist, precancerous lesions.
