Abstract

The prevalence of mental disorders among addicts is notable. The aim of this study was assessment of the mental health status of intravenous drug addicts participated in drop-in-centres (DIC). Â Materials and Methods: In this case control study 194 addicts from DIC of East Azerbaijan, north western part of Iran, were selected as the case and 130 addicts from Razi Hospital methadone maintenance therapy (MMT) clinic of Tabriz (capital of East Azerbaijan) were selected as the control group. Mental health status of addicts was evaluated using general health questionnaire-28 and collected data were analysed by U Mann-Whitney and multiple logistic regression tests. Â Results: The prevalence of mental disorders in DIC addicts and MMT addicts were 78.4 and 92.3, respectively. DIC addicts obtained significantly lower scores in general health questionnaire (P<0.05) than MMT addicts, showing higher quality of mental health. The prevalence of alcohol dependency and committing crime has been found to be high among drug users. Being single was associated with more mental disorders among addicts. Â Conclusion: High prevalence of mental disorders among addicts could lead to difficulties to achieve permanent abstinence and also increasing risk taking and antisocial behaviors. Higher scores in mental health questionnaire of DIC addicts in comparison to MMT addicts, suggest the positive effects of psychological interventions for this population. Â
